A Fine Sanding Pad for Finishing Work

Nineteen millimeters of width is a size for surfaces, not for crevices. A pad with a working face this wide spreads the pressure and leaves the surface flat instead of grinding a hollow into it. It comes into its own on sanding down a fuselage joint, on wing surfaces, on the sides of a cargo bed or on large castings, where a parting plane needs to be leveled without waviness.

Two Grits on One Tool

Each side carries a different abrasive, 240 and 320, so you can move smoothly from leveling to smoothing without putting the tool down. After a coarser tool it removes the remaining scratches and prepares the surface for the base coat. It is precisely the transition between grits that decides whether the pattern left by sanding will show through the paint.

The flexible core between the abrasives adapts to a slight curve, which is essential when working on fuselages and cowlings. The tool will take wet sanding, during which the abrasive clogs less and the dust does not fly around the workshop. After use it is enough to rinse it, let it dry and it serves on. Its life meanwhile exceeds that of a piece of abrasive paper many times over.

Press only lightly and lead the movement along the shape of the part. On plastic, heat builds up faster than you would expect, and an overheated surface flows into a smooth film that the paint will then pick out.

If the place being sanded adjoins fine engraving, cover the surroundings with tape so that the lines do not disappear with the very first stroke. When you have finished, wipe the surface with a damp cloth and let it dry, because the remaining dust would otherwise be baked into the base coat.
