Brown-Violet RLM 81 is a dark brown-violet shade by Hataka from the Orange Line, the manufacturer's part number HTK-C008. The designation comes from the German system of standard aircraft colors and belongs to the trio of late camouflage shades that appear on upper surfaces in the last phase of the Second World War. Alongside it, the lighter green RLM 82 was used at the same time, and the light RLM 76 on undersides.
RLM 81 is a shade that is still disputed today. Surviving samples differ from one another in the proportion of brown and green, because the paint was supplied by several makers and wartime formulations were not uniform. The practical conclusion for a build is this: compare the shade against the documentation for the particular machine you are building, and do not take any one bottle as the only right answer. On a small model the shade also looks darker than on a large area, which is worth allowing for when shading.
Stir the contents of the bottle well. The thinner made for this line and the thinning ratio are given by the manufacturer on the packaging, so follow those instructions. A dark shade covers well, so thin coats are enough; a heavy application only clogs the fine surface detail. The transitions of late camouflage tend to be soft, so run them freehand at reduced pressure with the nozzle close to the surface.
The model, thinner, brushes and airbrush are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
