A modeling paint from Hataka's Orange Line. The shade carries the name Cherry Red and the designation BS 381C:538. BS 381C is a British standard of color shades in which every tone has its own number; paint makers refer to it so that it is clear which original a shade comes close to and so that it can be compared across brands. In this system the number 538 belongs precisely to a deep red tone with a cast toward dark.
Stir the bottle thoroughly before use; the pigment settles at the bottom. Choose the thinner and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging, so always the thinner intended for this line. Mixing different lines together does not pay off; the binder can curdle and the finish then goes grainy. Spray in thin coats and let each one become tacky. Wash the base beforehand, degrease it and even it out with a primer.
A deep red is among the shades that cover worst. The pigment is translucent, so on dark plastic the tone comes out toward brown and on light plastic toward pink. It therefore pays to lay the paint on a light, evened-out base and to add rather more thin coats than one heavy one. Red also likes to seep into the edges of masking tape, so press the tape down firmly and spray at right angles to the joint, not at an angle under it. Let the finished coat cure properly; a saturated coat dries longer than it seems.
The paint itself is supplied. Thinner, primer and varnish are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
