Dark Earth is a brown earthy shade listed in the British BS 381C standard under number 450. During the Second World War it formed a pair with a dark green on the upper surfaces of British aircraft; the irregular fields of the two colors were meant to blend the machine with the fields and woods below it. That combination is known as the Temperate Land Scheme and is among the most frequently built schemes of all.
Use the thinner made for this range and the thinning ratio from the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging; another solvent may curdle the paint or change its sheen. Always stir the bottle thoroughly, so that the settled pigment returns into the paint and the shade stays the same even after longer standing. An airbrush and several light passes give a smoother surface than one heavy coat, which floods the fine surface relief of the model.
Wash, degrease and prime the model before painting. The boundary between the brown and the green was soft on the real machines, so when spraying choose a shorter distance and lower pressure, or raise the mask above the surface, so that the edge is not sharp as a cut. Test the shade on an offcut first: after drying and after varnishing it looks different from the way it does in the bottle.
The thinner, brushes, masks and airbrushes are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
