A Hataka modeling paint from the Orange Line range. The shade carries the name Extra Dark Sea Grey, that is, a very dark sea gray, and the designation BS 381C:640. BS 381C is the British standard of color shades, in which every shade has its own number; paint makers refer to it so that it is clear which real subject the shade comes close to and so that it can be compared across brands. In that system the number 640 belongs to exactly this dark gray with a bluish cast.
Stir the bottle thoroughly before use, the pigment settles at the bottom. Choose thinner and thinning ratio according to the instructions given by the manufacturer on the packaging, that is, always the thinner intended for this range. Spray in thin coats and let them flash off in between. Wash, degrease and prime the substrate beforehand; on a greasy surface a dark coat runs into patches.
Dark shades have two pitfalls. First, they mercilessly show every unsanded seam and every fingerprint, so it pays to look the surface over carefully under a sharp light before painting. Second, on a model they read darker still than on a real machine, because the distance and the diffused light are missing. Modelers therefore lighten large areas in small scales a little and let the shade be darkened only by the shading that follows.
The paint is supplied on its own. Thinner, primer and clear coat are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
