About product

Colonial British flag — a Constructo accessory for wooden ship models

This item is not a ship model, but a small finishing accessory. It is a ready-made flag intended for wooden models of historic sailing ships, that is, for builds from wooden strips completed with brass and metal fittings. The flag is added at the end of the build, when the hull is planked, the masts are up and the rigging is done. It is precisely such details that decide whether a model looks like a finished piece of work or like an unfinished structure.

The real subject

The flags of British colonial ships grew out of the basic British pattern, which was placed in the upper corner by the staff, while the rest of the field carried the color of the relevant group of ships. By this key, merchant and state ships connected with the British colonies were distinguished in the age of sail. Always compare the particular form and use on a model with the documentation for your own subject, because the variants differed over time and by type of ship.

Usage tips

Unfold the flag carefully and let it straighten out before fitting. You will get the natural shape of a flying field by waving it lightly over a rounded object and fixing it with very thinned PVA glue; once it has dried it holds its shape on its own. Attach it to the flag halyard or to a yard with thin thread in the same shade as the rest of the rigging. Avoid long rubbing between the fingers and direct sunlight, and it is a good idea to secure the edges of the field only gently, so that they do not fray.

Who it is for

  • For builders of wooden models of historic sailing ships who are finishing the details.
  • For adding to or replacing the flags on a model that has already been built.
  • For modelers who want to save themselves printing and sewing a flag of their own by hand.
  • For display and competition models, where even small finishing is judged.

It is a separate accessory, not a complete ship model. Glue, thread, paints and other materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a separate accessory, that is, a ready-made flag which you add to your own wooden ship model. Neither the model nor its parts are included in the package.

Most often it is tied with thin thread to the flag halyard or to a yard. The natural waving of the field can be fixed with very thinned PVA glue.

The size and the material are stated on the packaging of the accessory. Before buying, please check that the size matches the scale of your model.

Judge the suitability by the period and the nationality of your own subject and by the size of the masts.
