Deep Purple - AK interactive 3rd Generation acrylic paint

A bottled acrylic with a water-thinnable binder, not an enamel and not a lacquer. The shade is a deep violet with a dark, rather cool character. On a model it suits anywhere the violet should be serious rather than decorative: on the fairing of a motorcycle or a racing car, on the cloak and fabric of a figure, on science fiction and fantasy hardware and as a tinting component in dark reds and blues.

Which surfaces it belongs on and how it behaves

Dark shades behave the opposite way to pastels. Over a black or dark gray base they come up easily and even the area out quickly, while over a white primer you have to expect the first coats to look uneven, with the tone evening out only after further passes. That is exactly why Deep Purple is useful as a shadow color: add a drop to red or blue and you get a natural-looking dark tone in the recesses, without reaching for black, which grays the color down. Combine it with shades from the same acrylic line; not with oil paints and lacquers.

Spraying with an airbrush

• Stir the paint thoroughly before spraying so that the pigment does not sit at the bottom.
• Thin it to the consistency of milk; with a dark violet it is better to lay down three translucent coats than one heavy one.
• A thick dark paint readily floods engraved lines - keep the pressure lower and the amount of paint per pass smaller.
• If you want to shade, thin it much more and mist it only into the recesses and seams.
• Flush the airbrush right after work; dried dark paint in the nozzle is the hardest to clean.
