Denison Tan Base – FIGURES is the base sandy brown shade from the figure subrange of the AK interactive 3rd Generation acrylics, intended as the undertone beneath the camouflage pattern of the British airborne Denison smock.

A bottled water-thinnable acrylic from the 3rd Generation Acrylic range, from the subrange put together for painting figures. The word Base in the name has a specific meaning: this is not the final tone but the underlying area onto which the darker blotches of the camouflage pattern are only then applied. The paint thins with water or with the acrylic thinner of the same brand, and brushes are washed in water while the paint is still wet.
A sandy brown, slightly yellowish tone with no orange cast. On a figure it forms the continuous area of cloth over which the pattern is built with a brush or an airbrush. Because it is a lighter base, it holds darker glaze coats well beneath them and does not reduce their depth. On its own it also suits the canvas items of kit, straps and packs, where a neutral beige with no green undertone is wanted.
The base area has to be smooth, otherwise every unevenness will show through the pattern drawn on top. Do not apply the paint in one heavy coat, then; thin it to roughly the consistency of milk and lay it down in three or four misted passes, letting the surface flash off between them. Thin paint flows into the folds by itself and does not flood the engraved detail, while thick paint fills the transitions and the figure loses its sharpness. If the base shows through after the first pass, that is not a fault; just carry on with the next one.
Keep out of the reach of children, work in a ventilated space and shake the bottle thoroughly before use.
