Small turfs – early autumn are finished grassy pieces in the ocher-yellow tone of the first autumn grass. In a scene they are simply laid down and glued.

A finished painted turf from the Czech diorama vegetation manufacturer Model Scene. The grassy surface is ready to be laid down and glued — it is not applied electrostatically and nothing on it needs touching up with paint. The small format is suitable for spot placement: at the feet of walls and fences, around stumps, into ditches, onto road shoulders and into the corners of a base, where a continuous area of lawn would look artificial.
Early autumn means a predominance of ocher and yellow tones with remnants of green in the ground layer. It corresponds roughly to September and the first half of October, when the grass has already grown out and is losing its color but is not yet lying limp on the ground. In a scene it is a rewarding shade, because it contrasts with dark vehicles and with dark soil and visually brightens a scene. It goes excellently with autumn leaf litter, with muddy ruts and with a misty, low-lit atmosphere.
Clean the base, apply a thin layer of PVA glue, press the turf down and weight it until dry. Always thin the edges out with tweezers and hide the transition into the terrain with soil, sand or leaves — an uncovered edge is the commonest mistake with finished turfs. Lay several pieces with irregular gaps and fill them in with bare ground. You will heighten the autumn impression by scattering fine leaf litter into the growth before the glue dries.
The turfs are supplied finished and painted. The glue, the base and any further scenery materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
