Layering instead of a single pass

The most common mistake with dry brushing is trying to settle everything in one stroke with a full brush. The result is a dusty, chalky surface on which the strokes show. The correct approach is the opposite: dry the brush almost completely and go over the same place several times, with pauses and only for as long as it takes for the edge to start standing out. Each pass adds only a fraction of the pigment, so you keep the transition under control and can stop at any point. And if you make the second pass over a smaller area than the first, a soft transition arises from the surface to the highest point that looks like a smooth modulation, even though you did it with a dry brush.

Use

• Plan two or three light passes instead of one heavy one.
• Narrow each further pass, so that only the real top of an edge or a fold stays lightest.
• Between passes put the model down and look at it from a distance, because the degree of the effect is hard to judge from close up.
• Stir the contents of the bottle before work, so that the shade is the same in all the layers.
• Clean the brush as you go, because clogged bristles stop spreading the paint evenly.
