Madworks TS Wide Chisel - a wide chisel

A single wide chisel from the Madworks brand with a blade of sintered carbide, popularly tungsten steel. Unlike fine scribers, which draw a hairline, it has a flat wide edge: it suits places where a wider groove has to be cut or deepened, where the bottom of a line has to be leveled or a thin layer of material pared off. The line comes in several graded blade widths and the particular width is stated on the box.

Use

• Restoring and deepening wider panel lines that have been flooded by primer or paint.
• Cutting grooves for the frames of doors, hatches and service panels.
• Leveling the bottom of a line already engraved and paring off the remains of a mold parting line in a surface.
• Carefully removing a thin layer of putty or flash without disturbing the detail around it.

How to work with it

• Draw the chisel toward you in light strokes and add depth gradually, not in one strong pass.
• Mark the line out in advance and back it with tape or a steel ruler; the blade will then not slip off.
• The manufacturer does not recommend using these chisels on metal; the edge is hard, but brittle.
• Do not let the chisel fall and store it with its cap on - the tip breaks off easily.

Who the scriber is for

For more advanced modelers who restore the panel lines themselves after filling and sanding or who alter the shape of parts. It is not a kit, nor an accessory for one particular model, but a tool. Glue, paints and putties are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
