Before you add it to the basket: these are not plastic parts, but a decal sheet from the Japanese Studio27 in 1:24 scale. It is not a kit. For it to be of any use to you, you have to own a Hasegawa Porsche 962 kit: you build the model, spray it and only then do these markings go on it. The sheet covers the span of the seasons 1987 to 1989, which with Studio27 usually means more than one variant of the car on one sheet.

Advan and the Japanese road of Group C

Advan is the racing tire brand of Yokohama and its red and black combination is among the most recognizable things Japanese motorsport has created. It was carried by a whole range of cars, among them the Porsche 962 in the JSPC, the Japanese sports prototype championship. This series is the key to understanding why the sheet exists: it was the Japanese counterpart of Group C, a domestic, extremely crowded racing world which ran alongside the European one and had stars and sponsors of its own. The high point of the season was the 1000 km race at Fuji.

The Porsche 956/962 was the most successful car of the endurance racing era and at the same time a customer car, as Porsche sold it to private stables all over the world. That is why the same shape appeared in dozens of utterly different colors. A kit from the box offers one, possibly two; a collector, though, wants that particular car of his. That is what this sheet is for.

Practical advice on the application

• The surface under a decal has to be glossy. Matte clear coat means air under the film, which means a silvering decal and ruined work.
• Large sponsor areas on the curved hood of a prototype call for decal softener, otherwise the film will not settle and will make folds.
• You spray the color of the body. The decals are only a complement to the base, as both the red and the black areas have to be applied with paint.
• A final clear coat and polishing levels the edges of the decals into one smooth surface.

Who the sheet is for

For owners of the Hasegawa Porsche 962 kit who want a model in a Japanese livery that nobody else at a show will have. Other color variants of the Porsche 962 exist as well.
