HEKI Grass Tufts and Strips, Green

A combined box from the German maker HEKI containing one hundred individual grass tufts and six grass strips in a medium green shade, with very low growth two millimeters high. Medium green is the most general-purpose tone in the whole range, and combined with low growth it produces exactly what most layouts lack: tended, trodden and mown grass that differs from the tall growth on grassy strips between fields.

• low growth between paving and on trodden ground
• overgrown joints and post footings
• filling in an area that looks too smooth

How to work with the material

Neither the tufts nor the strips are self-adhesive; they are fixed with modeling glue, ideally a flock adhesive or PVA glue. Lay the strips into a thin line of glue and seat the tufts with tweezers into individual drops. With low growth the gaps matter as much as the grass itself: a trodden area should be bare in places, otherwise it turns into a carpet. Around post and fence footings, by contrast, leave the grass denser, because that is where no mowing is done.

For layout and diorama builders fine-tuning low vegetation, and for modelers who want to distinguish a tended area from an overgrown one. This is modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its scenery products as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
