Styrodur 600 x 280 x 3 mm, 4 pcs

What it is

A package of four Styrodur sheets from the Heki company. Each sheet measures 600 x 280 mm and is 3 mm thick, so together that is roughly two thirds of a square meter of area in one thickness. Styrodur is a rigid extruded polystyrene foam: it is light, it holds its shape, it does not warp and it can be worked with ordinary modeling tools.

Field of use

Four identical sheets are exactly what you need for layering. A thickness of 3 mm is small enough for the stepped transitions between layers to be sanded easily into a smooth slope, and at the same time large enough for the terrain to grow at a reasonable pace. The same material will serve as the base under a scene, as the filling of hollow shapes, as the core of buildings or as a flat platform onto which a roadway and greenery are laid.

How to work with the material

• Cut with a sharp knife along a ruler; at a thickness of 3 mm two shallower passes are usually enough.
• Glue the layers, let the joint cure and only then sand the edges into a slope.
• Use a glue intended for polystyrene foam, because preparations with solvents will etch the foam.
• Try the paint and the putty out on an offcut first, so that you know how the surface will react.
• You will hide the grainy texture of the foam with a thin layer of modeling compound or plaster.

Four sheets of the stated size are supplied. The glue, the paints, the tools and other building material are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
