Clinker masonry in a scene

Clinker is a hard-fired brick with a dense surface that tends to be darker and rawer than ordinary brick masonry. In reality it built factories, warehouses, station buildings, bridge abutments and the perimeter walls of industrial sites, that is exactly what a diorama or a layout most often lacks. A regular course of brick also tells the viewer the scale of the whole scene straight away.

Dimensions and scale

The sheet measures 40 x 20 cm and is intended for H0 scale, that is 1:87. On the real subject such an area would correspond to a wall roughly 35 meters long and over 17 meters high, which is a great deal for one wall. From a single piece you will therefore usually get several partial surfaces: a building gable, a band of base course, the perimeter wall of a yard and the facing of a bridge abutment. Plan them out in advance so that you are not left with nothing but narrow offcuts.

Cutting and fitting

First offer the sheet up dry and draw round the shape, and only then cut. Run the cut along a joint, not across a brick, because an edge run across a brick looks artificial. Hide the join of two pieces behind a corner, a pier, a downpipe or some planting. Choose the glue according to the surface and the material of the sheet, try it on an offcut first and check the procedure in the manufacturer's instructions.

Painting and terms of supply

Real clinker does not have a uniform color and the individual bricks differ in shade, which brings the surface to life more than the best base tone. Once the base has dried, darken the joints with thinned paint; if the sheet has a raised surface, finish by working the edges of the bricks with a dry brush in a lighter shade. The foot of a wall is always dirtier at ground level than the upper part. Paints, glue, a base and the other parts of the scene are not included, unless stated otherwise.
