The universal bomb rack of the Royal Air Force

Between the wars and in the first years of the world conflict, British aircraft hung small bombs on simple steel racks that could be fitted under practically anything. The designation that this set carries as well belonged to the universal version, which was counted on for reconnaissance, cooperation and light bombing types alike, so the same piece of equipment can be found under the wing of aircraft that otherwise had little in common. It is exactly this universality that makes the set a rewarding accessory: you will use it on several builds without having to track down something different each time.

There are four pieces in the set, which corresponds to the usual carriage arrangement under one pair of wing halves. The rendering aims at a large scale, where even the details of the attachments and safety catches are visible, the kind that do not appear in the castings of ordinary kits at all. Besides the arms themselves, the suspension eyes and the pads on which the load rests are apparent too, so the installation looks convincing even without further fine-tuning.

Fitting to a model

The parts are slender, so separate them from the supports with a cut of a sharp blade and never break them, because at the point of a break the rack itself easily snaps too. Before gluing, try the position dry and mark a thin line on the lower surface of the wing, along which you will then seat all four pieces parallel. Super glue holds reliably but leaves no room for correction, so check the position beforehand. Finally, we recommend bringing the whole installation into one shade, the same as the underside of the fuselage carries.
