An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft Kawanishi Type 97 in 1:144 scale from Trumpeter. In the Imperial Japanese Navy the designation Type 97 was borne by the four-engined flying boat of the H6K family, known to the Allies under the reporting name Mavis. A small scale is an advantage with machines of such a large span, because the model stays reasonably sized even for an ordinary display cabinet.
Flying boats played a role in the Pacific that land-based aircraft could not fill. They took off from the water and stayed airborne long enough to search enormous stretches of ocean. The Kawanishi Type 97 had a high wing carried on struts above a slender hull with a boat bottom, four radial engines and stabilizing floats under the wing. It served for maritime reconnaissance, patrol and liaison, and during the war for transport as well. Against later types, however, it was slow and vulnerable, so it avoided encounters with enemy fighters.
The main work is on the wing. It has to sit level and symmetrical, or the model will visually lean to one side when seen from the front. Glue the struts and the floats only after the wing has dried and use a slower cement that leaves time to adjust the position. The hull with its boat bottom has a long lower joint that has to be filled and sanded, because it is exactly along that edge that the eye travels. A flying boat is not built on a landing gear, so decide in advance on a stand or a base representing the water.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
