Trumpeter 1:16 German Sd.Kfz.165 Hummel (Late Production) is an extensive plastic kit of a German self-propelled gun of the Second World War in the giant 1:16 scale: with over 1400 parts, photo-etch, a metal barrel and individual track links.
Responsibility details are not available.
The flagship among kits of military equipment: the Hummel self-propelled gun in its late production version in 1:16 scale. Trumpeter has put over 1400 parts into the package, photo-etched parts for the finest detail, a metal barrel for the howitzer, individual track links, a metal spring and copper cable; the lower hull is injection-molded in a multi-part mold. It is a new mold from 2025. The finished model measures roughly 42 cm long and 18 cm wide: count on a large, heavy piece that will ask for proper space in a display case.
The Sd.Kfz. 165 Hummel, meaning bumblebee, was a German self-propelled gun: a 150 mm heavy howitzer set in an open-topped fighting superstructure on a chassis derived from the Panzer III and IV tanks. It was not a machine for direct combat; the crew had only minimal protection from above and the Hummel served as mobile artillery, that is fire support for the armored divisions from the rear. The late production version is told from the early one above all by the reworked front superstructure: the driver's armored cab is no longer a separate box projecting on the left but is spread across the full width of the hull and covers the radio operator as well. The exhaust system was changed too. It is precisely by the full-width front superstructure that the two versions are told apart fastest in photographs.
An open-topped superstructure means there will be a view into the model, so finish and paint the interior and the howitzer mount before you close the superstructure up. The same holds for the running gear: the wheels, the rollers and the tracks are all easier to paint before final assembly. Assemble the track links in longer sections and, while they are only slightly set, wrap them over the wheels so that they settle into a natural sag. In 1:16 scale absolutely every mistake shows: a fingerprint, an unsanded filler seam and an uneven coat alike. Work with primer, spray with an airbrush in thin coats and check the surface against the light. The reward is enormous room for detail and weathering: washes into every rivet, pigments for mud and dust effects on the running gear, metal rub marks on the edges and worn places inside the superstructure.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
