USS Stevens (DD-479), the American Fletcher class destroyer as a plastic kit in the large 1:200 scale from Trumpeter. The finished model is roughly 57 cm long and captures Stevens in her unusual form with a catapult for a floatplane.
Responsibility details are not available.
Injection-molded plastic kit of the American destroyer in 1:200 scale from Trumpeter. Careful: 1:200 is a large scale. The finished model is roughly 57 cm long and is markedly bigger and more detailed than the same type of ship in the more common 1:350. The manufacturer states around 490 parts on thirteen sprues, a one-piece hull produced by slide-mold tooling, a finely engraved deck, two photo-etched frets (railings, ladders, radars and fine detail) and a display stand with a nameplate. A catapult and a floatplane are included too, and it is exactly that equipment that makes this box something other than an ordinary Fletcher.
The Fletcher class is the most numerous class of destroyers in history: 175 ships were built. They were the all-round workhorses of the Pacific: escorting aircraft carriers and convoys, fighting submarines, providing anti-aircraft defense and shelling the coast. The armament was five 127 mm guns and ten torpedo tubes, and the speed exceeded 35 knots. USS Stevens (DD-479) was one of only three ships of the class that actually received an experimental catapult with a floatplane for reconnaissance, in place of the rear torpedo mount and one gun. The trial did not prove itself in combat and the catapult was removed at the end of 1943; the ship returned to the standard configuration. It is exactly this brief and unrepeatable form that the kit captures.
In a larger scale the detail shows to advantage, but so does every mistake: the main work is on the superstructures, the armament, the railings and the rigging. Work in subassemblies, paint them separately and glue them on at the end. An airbrush and a base of primer are practically a necessity on a large hull, because an even surface is hard to achieve with a brush. Glue the photo-etch with cyanoacrylate glue and the plastic with liquid cement for plastic. Consider whether you will build the model with the full hull on the stand or only to the waterline for a diorama with a water surface.
Looking for the same class in a smaller size? The USS Fletcher (DD-445) in 1:350 scale from I Love Kit is the lead ship of the whole class, with a finished model of around 33 cm, that is roughly half the length. This box is the choice when you want size and detail instead.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
