The Red Top is a British infrared-guided air-to-air missile. It was carried by the English Electric Lightning and de Havilland Sea Vixen fighters. On an airfield the missiles were taken to the aircraft on low transport trolleys and hung on by the ground crew; it is exactly this scene that the set captures. Figures of mechanics at work give a display case the scale and the action a model aircraft on its own can never offer.
A pair of figures of aircraft mechanics in 1:32 scale, plus a Red Top missile and a transport trolley. The parts are supplied unpainted and the individual figures are as a rule assembled from several pieces before painting. The exact division of the parts and the recommended shades are described in the manufacturer's instructions.
The parts are not polystyrene and ordinary modeling cement has no effect on them; join them with cyanoacrylate glue. Cut surplus material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest carefully, so as not to spoil the shape of the figure. Before painting, wash and degrease the parts, or the paint will hold poorly. A primer proves itself, then the shades of the coveralls and finally a dry brush on the raised folds.
The set belongs in dioramas with British Cold War fighter equipment and will also serve as a standalone way of bringing a display case to life beside a finished model. It will be valued by modelers who want to show an aircraft in preparation for takeoff, not just standing on the ramp. Paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
