The real subject

The Lockheed F-117A is an American single-seat attack aircraft that differs from other machines at first glance: the surface of the airframe is put together from flat facets, because it is precisely angled surfaces that deflect incoming radar waves to the side instead of back toward the source. The shape therefore did not come about for aerodynamics but for concealment. For a model that means long flat surfaces with no curvature, on which every unevenness and every joint shows.

The set

This is an add-on set intended for the F-117A in 1:32 scale, that is for a large scale in which it pays to handle fine detail with separate parts. Which parts of the aircraft the set covers is specified by the packaging and the manufacturer's instructions; follow them when modifying the kit too, because accessories of this kind usually replace the original plastic parts and require their removal.

Preparing the parts

Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a short distance from the part and sand the remainder off carefully, so as not to sand away the edge the whole shape rests on. Try the mating surfaces dry and remove from the model everything that would stop the part from seating. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, otherwise the finish will not hold on the surface. A suitable glue and the particular preparation procedure are given in the manufacturer's instructions. Apply the paint in thin coats; on the flat surfaces of this aircraft every heavy coat and every transition shows more than on a curved fuselage.
