A resin replacement wheels set for the Lockheed P-38 Lightning kit in 1:32 scale, in the version marked Type 2. It is not an aircraft model but a detailing accessory for one. The resin castings have sharp tread detail, a legible hub shape and detail on the hubcaps, and they do without a mold parting line; on plastic wheels you have to sand that line away, and the sidewall lettering goes with it. In a scale as large as 1:32 the difference in how the wheels are made really does show on the finished model. The manufacturer lists the Lightning wheels in two versions, Type 1 and Type 2, as two separate items.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning is a single-seat twin-engine fighter with its distinctive twin-boom layout, a central nacelle for the pilot and the armament, and a nose landing gear, which was unusual on fighters at the time it appeared. It served as a fighter, an escort, a reconnaissance and a ground-attack machine and was built in a series of versions that differed, among other things, in equipment and landing gear details. That is exactly why accessory wheel sets distinguish several versions, and why it pays to compare a photograph of the particular machine before ordering.
First wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap because of the remains of mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a fine knife and level the cuts with fine abrasive paper, preferably wet and with respiratory protection. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; plastic cement will not join resin. Apply a primer before painting. Set the tire apart from the hub with the shade, using a dark gray with a hint of brown instead of pure black, and bring out the sidewall lettering with a light dark wash. Fit the wheels only once the gear bays are finished and painted, otherwise they will be in the way while you work.
This is an accessory set, not an aircraft model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
