About product

Vallejo Cracked wall – a cracked wall stencil, 1:35

This item is neither a kit, a paint nor a modeling paste. It is a stencil from the Spanish brand Vallejo: a sheet with a cut-out motif of fissures and cracked plaster through which the paint is applied with an airbrush, a brush or a sponge. The result is a drawn, that is optically created effect of a damaged wall on an otherwise smooth or only slightly textured surface in 1:35 scale.

A painted crack against a scribed one

A genuinely scribed crack in plaster or plastic is laborious, irreversible and easily overdone. A sprayed motif can be subdued, added to or completely painted over, so you can tune the intensity of the damage to the overall effect of the scene. You will get the best results by combining the two: a few genuinely scribed main fissures and alongside them a network of fine painted cracks, which scribing alone can never manage at such a fineness.

How to work with it

Finish the wall including the base coat and let it cure. Lay the stencil on and spray with a darker shade of the surface, not with black: black turns the cracks into an ink drawing. Thin the paint heavily and spray at an angle rather than perpendicular, so that the impression arises that the fissure has depth and casts a shadow. You will strengthen the effect by adding a thin light line along one side of the crack once the stencil is off, as if the edge of the plaster had flaked away. Finally unify the whole wall with a light veil of the base shade so that the cracks are not too contrasting. Clean the stencil at once.

Who it is for

  • Builders of dioramas with buildings and ruins in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who build backdrops from foam material or plaster
  • Anyone who wants to tune the damage and perhaps put it right
  • Airbrush users working with fine differences of shade

A stencil is an aid for painting. Paints, thinner and diorama material are not included in the package. Ventilate while spraying.

FAQ

It will not. It is an optically painted effect sprayed through a mask and the surface stays smooth. For three-dimensional fissures scribing or a texture paste is needed.

A darker shade of the same tone as the wall. Black looks like an ink drawing and kills the effect.

Spray at an angle rather than perpendicular, and once the stencil is off add a thin light line along one side of the fissure.

The motif is sized for 1:35. In other scales the result depends on the size of the wall, so try it on scrap material first.
