The markings on German vehicles had a practical purpose: they let the unit a vehicle belonged to, and its place in the formation, be recognized in the field. Besides the national cross there were tactical signs for the branch of a unit, formation badges and the numbering of vehicles on the turret, which told the company and the order within it apart. The look and the placement differed by period and by whoever did the painting — in the field it was often a stencil or hand painting. When choosing, go by a photograph of the subject and by the illustration on the packaging of the sheet.
With small markings, preparing the base matters more than the application itself. Seal the area with gloss clear and let it dry thoroughly. Trim the design close to the print, soak it briefly in warm water and let it rest on a piece of paper until the film releases. Settle it with a soft brush, soak up the water and add a softener in two thin coats. Once dry, unify the whole surface with matte clear.
