About product

Sd.Kfz.179 Bergepanther Ausf. G late version in 1:35 scale from Hobby Boss

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German recovery vehicle of the end of the Second World War. The designation Sd.Kfz.179 belongs to the Bergepanther, that is the recovery conversion of the Panther tank, and the qualifier Ausf. G says that it is a machine built on the late Panther Ausf. G chassis. The model is released by Hobby Boss in 1:35 scale, which is the most widespread one for German equipment of that period.

The real subject

German tank units needed a machine that could pull the weight of the Panther and the Tiger, because half-track tractors were no longer enough for that. The Bergepanther therefore came into being on the production Panther chassis: instead of a turret it received an open superstructure with a tarpaulin, a powerful winch inside the hull and at the rear a lowering earth spade, which dug into the ground during a pull and took up the reaction force. A folding crane jib for handling an engine was part of the equipment as well. The late vehicles were based on the Ausf. G chassis and received the corresponding details of late production.

Building and painting tips

First finish the running gear and the inside of the hull including the winch, and only then close the hull up. Leave the tracks and the wheels for separate painting; they are glued on only after the hull has been sprayed. A late German vehicle comes out well in the base dark yellow with sprayed patches, over a gloss clear under the decals and with a dark wash in the rivets and the gaps. The earth spade and the blade differ from their surroundings in the abrasion of the metal, which can be suggested with a graphite pencil or with a silver pigment.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of German equipment of the Second World War
  • Modelers who enjoy support vehicles and engineering machines
  • Builders of dioramas about field repairs and the recovery of damaged tanks
  • More experienced modelers interested in the late versions of the Panther family

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It has no turret and no main gun. Instead it carries an open superstructure, a winch inside the hull and at the rear a lowering earth spade, which it braces against during a pull.

It determines which variant of the Panther chassis the vehicle is based on. Ausf. G is the late form, and the details of the hull correspond to it.

It is an earth spade. Before a pull it is lowered and digs into the terrain, so that the vehicle does not move backwards while the winch works.

The base dark yellow coat complemented by sprayed or brush-applied patches. The exact scheme differed from machine to machine.
