A kit of the Soviet heavy anti-aircraft gun of 100 mm caliber in 1:35 scale. A weapon that covered the sky over industry and airfields in the Eastern Bloc for decades.
Responsibility details are not available.
When bombers began to fly higher after the Second World War, the eighty-eights and eighty-fives of the Eastern Bloc stopped being enough. The answer was a heavy gun of one hundred millimeters introduced at the end of the 1940s, able to hit a target at an altitude the previous generation could not reach. The crew moved it on a four-wheeled carriage behind an artillery tractor and lowered it onto cruciform outriggers in the firing position.
The barrel itself was only one part of the system. The fire of the whole battery was controlled by a director linked to an artillery radar that tracked the target and passed the data on for automatic laying. It was precisely this transfer of aiming data to the servo drives that set the upgraded form apart from the original and made the weapon effective even against fast-moving targets.
The gun spread to Egypt, Syria, Vietnam, China and Cuba, and in many armies it stayed in service long after guided missiles had taken over its role. In mountain regions one more use was found that the designers had not thought of – firing into the slopes released accumulated avalanches.
The set brings unassembled plastic parts that the builder cleans up, glues and paints; neither paints nor glue are included.
Artillery equipment without a hull and without armor makes different demands than a tank. Most of the appearance is made up of exposed structure, outriggers, gearing and laying mechanisms, so there is nowhere to hide an inaccurately glued joint. The reward is a model that is interesting from every side and looks good even on a small base with a crew of two.
The weapon also lends itself as an addition to a larger scene: it fits a firing position, a tractor and a railway flatcar during transport.
