About product

MASTER 1:35 M197 - three-barrel 20 mm rotary cannon with turned barrels

A metal detail accessory in 1:35 scale from the Polish brand MASTER. It contains the turned barrels of the three-barrel M197 rotary cannon of 20 mm caliber supplemented by etched clamps that hold the cluster of barrels together. The M197 cannon is a weapon carried among others by the AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter, where it is mounted in the turret under the nose. This is not a kit: it is a replacement for a plastic part in a model you already own.

Why modelers buy it

A multi-barrel rotary weapon is all but unsolvable for injection-molded plastic. Three barrels side by side have to be the same length, parallel and keep an exact spacing, and any deviation is immediately visible from the front. A plastic molding also carries a parting line and its muzzles are blind. Turned metal barrels have a real bore, hold their diameter along the whole length and do not twist. The etched clamps then fix the spacing and at the same time give the cluster the sharply stepped detail that plastic could not achieve. The assembly also takes being touched during handling without bending.

Assembly and painting tips

First try dry how the barrels pass through the clamps, and only then glue anything. Bend the etched parts over a straight edge or in a bender, not with your fingers. Set the clamps at a right angle to the cluster and fix them with a tiny drop of cyanoacrylate applied on the tip of a needle; excess glue will clog the gaps between the barrels. Let the whole thing cure on a flat surface so that the spacing does not twist. Before painting, degrease the assembly with alcohol and apply a primer for metal. The barrels look good after blackening; settled fine dust and smoke marks are then added at the very end, lightly and thinned.

Who the set is for

  • builders of AH-1 Cobra models in 1:35 scale
  • modelers who want exact spacing and parallel barrels
  • anyone who already has experience bending etched parts
  • builders of helicopters, where the armament is the main visual element

The set is supplied unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

A three-barrel rotary cannon of 20 mm caliber. It is carried among others by the AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter in the turret under the nose.

No. It is a set of replacement metal barrels and etched clamps for a kit you have already bought.

The turned barrels yes, but the etched clamps call for patience and exact dosing of the glue. At least basic experience with etched parts is recommended.

With three barrels side by side, any deviation in length and spacing is immediately visible. Metal holds the geometry and the muzzles come bored from the factory.
