Twenty resin parts for a field laundry scene in 1:35 scale. The kind of rear-area setting that dioramas usually lack.
Responsibility details are not available.
An army does not fight without a break. Between moves there is cooking, mending and washing, and most of the surviving photographs come from exactly those moments. This set of twenty castings aims precisely there: at the improvised rear-area setting that came together out of whatever was at hand.
A viewer looks a tank over in a few seconds. What stops him is a moment he understands from his own life - washing hung out to dry, a board leaning against something, a bucket of water. A scene like that needs no explosions or hits; it holds the attention by the situation alone.
One meter of reality shrinks in 1:35 to just under twenty-nine millimeters. A washboard sixty centimeters tall therefore comes to seventeen millimeters, a washtub half a meter across to fourteen, and a line strung between two posts over three meters apart to just under nine centimeters. Most of the twenty parts are smaller than a little fingernail, which is why the castings are kept in a shallow dish right up to the moment they are glued down.
The castings are separated from the pour residue by cutting, not by breaking, because the material is brittle and a break takes a piece of the part with it. Next comes washing in lukewarm soapy water, which removes the mold release agent. The joints hold with super glue, or over larger areas rather with epoxy, which allows a part to be shifted for a moment before it sets. The last step belongs to water: a gloss coat in a shallow container and a few drops of the same varnish at the rim of the washtub will turn a dried-out scene into a wet operation.
