1:35 U.S AFV Gunnner

Armored vehicle gunner

The figure depicts an American armored vehicle gunner and is intended for models in 1:35 scale. A crew figure belongs to a vehicle just as much as the equipment on the deck does: it gives the model scale, reveals how big the machine really is and gives the scene a direction of view. Without a crew even a carefully built vehicle looks static, whereas with a single figure in the hatch it becomes a scene.

Preparation before painting

Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and carefully sand the remainder down, so that the surface stays whole. Then wash the figure in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and let it dry thoroughly; a degreased surface holds paint considerably better. Try the parts dry, above all at the shoulders and the neck, where the turn of the body shows the most.

Painting tips

• Start with a primer; on a smooth surface paint otherwise settles unevenly.
• Build the face and the hands from a mid flesh tone through the shadows to the highlights, not the other way around.
• Tone the uniform a shade lighter than the color you expect; a small scale darkens the shade.
• Suggest the eyes with a shadow rather than a white dot, which in 1:35 looks wide-eyed.
• Match the shades of dust and earth on the boots and the trousers to the vehicle the figure is built for.
