An injection-molded plastic kit of the American T30 heavy tank, one of the prototypes with which the United States tried to catch up with the heaviest German machines at the end of the Second World War. The model is released by Hobby Boss in 1:35 scale. The T30 never reached series production, which makes it all the more interesting in a display case beside the more commonly built Shermans and Pershings, because it shows where American heavy tank development was heading.
The T30 came out of the same program as the T29 heavy tank and shared its hull and overall layout. The essential difference lay in the main armament: while the T29 carried a gun of 105 millimeter caliber, the T30 received a massive 155 millimeter gun. It fired separate-loading ammunition, so the projectile and the cartridge case had to be loaded one after the other, and the turret therefore held two loaders and an auxiliary device for handling the rounds. The program began in the closing stage of the war, but the finished prototypes only appeared after it ended and were tested in the postwar years. The machine never entered service, yet what was learned from it shaped the postwar American heavy tanks.
Assemble the running gear first and check that all the wheels sit in one plane; on heavy tanks with a long hull any deviation shows at once. The barrel of the massive gun deserves careful sanding of the mold seam. Prototype machines were generally carried in a plain olive finish without colorful markings, so build the model around the surface texture: lighten the large areas, run a dark wash into the welds and add fine wear on the edges.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
