An injection-molded plastic kit of the British light cruiser HMS Calcutta in 1:350 scale. With ships this scale is a compromise between the size of the finished model and the chance to work out the detail: the superstructures, the boats and the gun turrets are big enough to be sensibly improved with photo-etched parts, and the model still stays manageable for a display case. Trumpeter offers the same subject in a smaller scale as well, so the choice can follow the room in your collection.
HMS Calcutta was a British C class light cruiser completed at the end of the First World War. In the 1930s, like several of her sister ships, she went through a conversion into an anti-aircraft cruiser: the original single guns were replaced by twin 102 mm mountings supplemented by rapid-firing anti-aircraft weapons. In that form she served in the Second World War above all to protect convoys and formations from air attack in the Mediterranean. She was sunk in 1941 during operations off the Egyptian coast.
First decide whether you are building the model with the full hull on a stand or in the waterline form for a diorama with a sea surface - painting the underwater part differs fundamentally between the two. Spray the hull with filler primer and sand any seams, because they will show on the large smooth surfaces. Wooden decks come out well with several shades of brown laid on in strips and unified with a filter. The anti-aircraft barrels and the fine rigging are the most vulnerable parts, so fit them only after the main painting. A thin wash picks out the hatches and the edges of the superstructures, and a final dry brush suggests wear.
