A turned metal detail set in 1:48 scale from the Polish brand MASTER, made for models of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter in the A-2 to A-5 versions. According to its name it holds the muzzles of the MG 17 machine guns, the barrels of the MG FF cannon, the barrels of the MG 151 cannon in their aerodynamic fairings and a Pitot tube. It is not a kit of the aircraft but a set of metal parts that go into a plastic model in place of the original parts from the mold.
The armament of the Fw 190 was split between the fuselage and the wing, so on a model there are several different types of barrel ending at once. Injection-molded plastic can manage them only as solid cylinders with a blunt tip; the muzzle is blind and the wall is necessarily thicker than the scale calls for. Turned metal brings a real bore, a precise and constant diameter along the whole length and a sharp ending. On the wing barrels in fairings, metal also keeps a regular spacing and the same overhang on both sides, which is almost impossible with hand-drilled plastic. The Pitot tube then solves the most fragile part of the whole model: in metal it is straight and survives handling.
Cut the plastic barrels off and level the surface. Drill the holes with a pin vise, working up gradually through smaller diameters so that the hole does not wander off axis. Fit each part dry first and check from the front and from above whether the barrels point parallel and have the same overhang. Glue with super glue or epoxy. Degrease the metal with alcohol, lay a primer for metal and rather blue or chemically blacken the barrels than cover them with an opaque paint. Fit the probe and the fragile tips only after the model has been varnished and weathered.
The set is supplied unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
