About product

Lockheed F-104DJ/J Starfighter (1:48, Kinetic)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter supersonic fighter in the versions of the Japanese air force, in 1:48 scale from Kinetic. The set is conceived as a 2 in 1 — it makes it possible to build either the single-seat F-104J or the two-seat F-104DJ trainer. It usually comes with a photo-etched part and Cartograf decals for a wide range of markings. The model is supplied as plastic parts; glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package.

The real subject

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was a supersonic fighter with a characteristically slim fuselage and short straight wings, nicknamed the missile with a man in it. It appeared in the 1950s and thanks to its high speed and rate of climb it became a symbol of the era of jet interceptors. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force operated the F-104J version, built under license by Mitsubishi, as an interceptor, together with the two-seat F-104DJ trainer. The Starfighter served with the Japanese air force for many years and is one of the icons of the Cold War.

Building and painting tips

Decide in advance whether you are building the single-seat or the two-seat version — they differ in the forward section and the cockpit. Paint and fit the cockpit before you close the fuselage; mask the glazing. Use liquid cement on the plastic, prime the surfaces and spray with an airbrush. Create the natural metal finish of the Japanese Starfighters with metallic paint on a smooth, well-polished base. Apply the rich Cartograf decals onto a gloss coat and settle them into the joints with a decal softener.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of Cold War jet fighters
  • For anyone interested in the Japanese air force and the F-104 Starfighter
  • For modelers who will appreciate the choice between the single-seat and the two-seat version
  • For intermediate and advanced builders in 1:48 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
