The MiG-21 family is a trap for the inattentive modeler: the individual versions differ, among other things, in exactly the shape and mounting of the pitot tube. This item from the Polish brand MASTER is intended for the PF and PFM versions, that is Fishbed D and F. For the other versions of the same type the manufacturer has separate items, so go by the particular version you are building, not just by the MiG-21 designation.
The pitot tube of the MiG-21 is long, made up of several steps of diameter and carries auxiliary sensors. In injection-molded plastic that means a compromise: the part is solid, with a seam along its whole length, and the steps are rounded off. Turned metal keeps a crisp profile, is straight and concentric along its whole length and has an open mouth. Because the tube projects far forward on the model, stiffness matters too. Plastic breaks at this point practically every time you put the model down carelessly; metal survives it.
Cut the plastic tube away and level the surface. Drill the hole for the pin with a micro drill, work up from a smaller diameter and keep test fitting dry as you go. Bond with super glue or epoxy; cement for plastic does not hold on metal. Check the alignment from above and from the front, because a tube glued in crooked spoils the impression of the whole model. Before painting, degrease the metal with alcohol and lay down a metal primer. Anyone who wants a bare metal look can simply polish the part and darken it by bluing. Fit the tube only after painting and decals, and it is better not to pick the finished model up by the nose.
