This kit in 1:48 scale captures the NF-5B, the two-seat variant of the light supersonic fighter built for the Dutch Air Force. It differed from the basic F-5B in a number of modifications which made it a version of its own, not just a differently painted machine. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; check the contents of the package and the number of parts on the box.
The F-5 line came into being as a simple, cheap and easily maintained supersonic fighter for allied air forces. Two J85 jet engines in a narrow fuselage, a small trapezoidal wing and low weight gave it brisk agility at modest operating costs. The two-seat versions had a lengthened forward fuselage with two cockpits one behind the other and served at the same time for training and for combat use. The Dutch NF-5 machines were based on the F-5A and F-5B but received modifications for operation from shorter runways and for better maneuvering qualities, in particular in the arrangement of the flaps and in the nose gear. In service they were machines much liked for their clarity and reliability.
On the two-seat version, pay the greatest attention to the cockpits, because they are well visible under the glazing and carry most of the detail. Finish the instrument panels and the seats and give them their patina before you close the fuselage. Mask the glazing with tape or with masks, and apply the primer in a thin coat so that the engraved panels do not disappear. The camouflage schemes of machines of this line tend to be broken up, so it pays to spray from the lighter tones to the darker ones and to do the transitions with a loose mask of putty or of paper held above the surface. Apply the decals on a gloss base and keep the final patina restrained. Do not forget sufficient weight in the nose; twin-engine fighters with a nose gear have a tendency to sit down on the tail.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
