A modern plastic kit of the Chinese-built Shenyang J-5 fighter in 1:48 scale from Kinetic. The J-5 is the Chinese licensed version of the Soviet MiG-17F jet fighter (NATO reporting name Fresco). The kit is injection-molded, with engraved surface detail, a detailed cockpit, glazing and decals that allow the aircraft to be built in the markings of several users. The exact number of parts is not stated here as certain; the binding source is the instruction sheet in the box.
The MiG-17 was a Soviet subsonic jet fighter, briefly supersonic in a dive, developed on from the MiG-15, with a swept wing and a single jet engine. The MiG-17F version had an engine with an afterburner. China built the type under license as the Shenyang J-5 and passed it on to further users. The aircraft saw use in Cold War conflicts and belong to the typical frontline fighters of the 1950s and 1960s.
Glue the parts with a thin cement for plastic and sand the seams of the fuselage and the air intake. Finish and paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage; the glazing supplied can be masked for clean framing. Lay down a primer under the finish, spray the metal and camouflage coats with an airbrush and add the panel emphasis, exhaust staining and wear typical of jet fighters in service.
