The real subject

The Su-31 is a single-seat aerobatic aircraft from the Sukhoi design bureau. It follows on from the earlier Su-26 and Su-29 machines, with which it shares a short stocky fuselage, fixed landing gear and a powerful radial piston engine. Its power-to-weight ratio puts the whole family among the sharpest aerobatic machines, and the varied sport schemes they fly in are among the most striking things seen at an airfield.

About the kit

This is a kit of the Su-31 aircraft in 1:48 scale from Quinta Models. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, so the finished piece comes about only under the modeler's hands. The assembly sequence and the painting scheme are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Building and painting tips

Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them dry properly, and the paint will then hold much better. Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the rest carefully, so that the shape is not disturbed. An aerobatic machine has a smooth gloss surface with no pronounced detail, so it pays to spend time sanding and polishing the joints; every unevenness shows under a gloss. Apply the saturated color areas in thin coats over a quality base and allow enough time for drying between the coats.

Who it is for

The model will please collectors of sport and aerobatic aircraft as well as modelers looking for a colorful counterpart to a display case full of military vehicles. Given the amount of work involved, it is a piece rather for builders with experience.
