An injection-molded plastic kit of the American cargo ship of the Liberty type in 1:700 scale from Trumpeter. The upper part of the hull is shaped as a single piece by slide molding, and the box also holds a waterline plate, so the model can be built full-hull or on the surface. It is a fairly straightforward kit, with which even a larger fleet of cargo ships for a convoy diorama is within reach.
Ships of the Liberty type were simple welded steamers built during the Second World War under the emergency shipbuilding program of the United States. More than 2700 were completed and they formed the backbone of supply to every theater, because they could be built quickly from prefabricated sections and in enormous numbers. The ship this model captures took part in dozens of voyages between Britain and Normandy in 1944 in support of the landings, and she survives to this day as a floating museum in San Francisco. She is therefore among the few representatives of the type that can be seen afloat.
Wartime cargo ships were painted simply and practically, yet the model comes to life if you differentiate the color of the deck, the superstructure and the hull below the waterline. The cargo masts and their derricks are the finest parts, so fit them last of all. Rust and streaking down the sides can be suggested with a fine wash, but in a small scale less is more. For the waterline version choose a calm surface with a wake astern.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
