A pair of B43 bombs in the early version, 1:72 scale. A slender body intended for tactical aircraft of the Cold War.
Responsibility details are not available.
The B43 family served from the early 1960s to the end of the Cold War and its slender shape with a long nose became one of the icons of the period. It was designed for release from low altitude, where the aircraft passes over the target and lets the load go on a retarding parachute stowed in the tail section. The crew thus gained time to get clear, which other solutions did not allow.
The pieces offered correspond to the first production shape, which differs from the later one in the arrangement of the nose and the tail. The difference is small, but for a builder aiming at a particular year and unit it matters; the manufacturer carries both shapes separately.
Two pieces in the package match a training configuration with weapons on both inner stations. At this scale the resin is slender and bends easily, so handle the parts carefully once they are out and straighten any bend by dipping them briefly in hot water and letting them cool flat.
Real examples carried a glossy light surface with prominent stenciling; training and inert versions were set apart by conspicuous stripes. At this small size it pays to knock the gloss back with a semi-matte varnish, otherwise the shape loses its clarity.
The carriers were tactical and carrier-based types armed for strike duties, and also aircraft of allied air forces in Europe. For the builder that means a wide choice of possible configurations, from a training flight with a single weapon to a full alert load. The aircraft itself is not part of this item; it is added to a kit according to the unit you choose.
