The Curtiss Hawk II was the export derivative of an American carrier fighter biplane of the early 1930s. It was a single-seat machine of classic mixed construction with fixed landing gear, an open cockpit and a radial engine that gave the aircraft its characteristic short and bulky nose. The type made its mark mainly on export markets; in that period a number of countries outside the United States operated it in small numbers, which made it one of the most widespread American fighter biplanes of its day.
With biplanes it pays to build in stages: first finish and paint the fuselage and both wings separately, and only then glue the interplane struts. It works well to set the wings dry and let the glue set with the parts in the right position. The rigging between the wings is best strung after painting. Short-run molds usually call for more patient fitting, so expect dry fitting, light sanding and some filler. Use liquid cement for plastic, apply a primer before painting and spray the colors in thin coats. Lay down a gloss coat for the decals and even the joints out at the end with a flat clear coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
