Grumman G-44 Widgeon 1:72 – Amphibious Aircraft (Kovozavody Prostejov)

Injection-molded plastic kit of the small amphibious flying boat Grumman G-44 Widgeon in 1:72 scale by the Czech manufacturer Kovozavody Prostejov. The subject is a twin-engine amphibian that, thanks to its retractable landing gear, could take off and land on both water and land.

The real subject

The Widgeon was the smaller sibling of the well-known Grumman Goose. It was a five-seat amphibious aircraft from the turn of the 1930s and 1940s, powered by two piston engines mounted on the high wing. It served in civilian use as well as with armed forces – for example with coast guards for patrol and rescue duties. Thanks to its ability to operate from both water and land, it was popular in remote areas.

Building and painting tips

Glue the small 1:72 scale parts with a thin liquid cement, and use canopy cement for the clear windows and cockpit. Decide whether to build the model with the gear retracted, in a waterborne pose on a stand, or with the gear extended on the ground. The hull and floats respond well to airbrushing over a primer coat. As this is a short-run kit, allow extra time for cleaning up the parts.
