Exhausts and a transmission cover for a 1:72 scale model of the Westland Wessex HC.2 transport helicopter. They replace the simplified plastic parts with castings with open mouths.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British Westland Wessex started out as a licensed Sikorsky S-58, but the island designers swapped the American radial piston engine for turbines. The HC.2 version for the Royal Air Force received a pair of Gnome units coupled into a common gearbox, which gave it a reserve of power and the ability to keep flying if one of them failed. The machine served from the early 1960s as a tactical transport, and its characteristic recognition feature remained the pair of exhaust pipes led out on the sides of the forward fuselage.
The exhaust pipes of the Wessex point diagonally aft and are genuinely hollow along their whole length. For molding reasons injection-molded plastic usually closes them off, a decal in their place can do nothing and a photo-etched sheet would have to be rolled into a cylinder with a seam. A casting gets around the problem by being formed in one piece together with its inner wall. The transmission housing cover added on the spine of the fuselage then brings a fine stepping of panels that is normally lost on the surface of a kit at such a small scale.
The original plastic parts are removed with a snap-off knife and the area is leveled with sandpaper on a block. Try the castings dry first and check the angle at which the pipes run out; breaking that angle shows on a finished model more than any surface inaccuracy. The inside is painted before gluing, because afterwards a brush cannot get into it. The set is intended for the kit from Airfix and the helicopter model itself is not included in it.
