Replacement cockpit glazing

A clear canopy for a model of the Spitfire Mk.I aircraft in 1:72 scale, that is a replacement transparent part for a kit. In small scales the glazing decides a great deal: the thinner and cleaner it is, the better the cockpit is visible and the more delicate the frames look. A replacement canopy is therefore bought where the part from a kit comes out thick, matte or inaccurate in shape.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.I is the first production version of the British single-engine fighter, deployed at the beginning of the Second World War. The recognition features of the machine are the wing with an elliptical plan and the narrow fuselage, into which the cockpit is set only shallowly; that is exactly why the shape of the canopy is so clearly visible on a model.

Building and painting tips

• do not take the clear surface in your fingers, as fingerprints show through under varnish
• try the fit dry, true any overhang with fine abrasive paper and then polish the surface
• glue with an adhesive intended for clear parts or with white PVA glue; super glue will fog a clear surface
• mask the frames with strips of tape or a mask before spraying, not once the paint has dried
• finish the inside of the cockpit before you fit the glazing

For the modeler who wants a clean cockpit and thin frames, and also for rescuing a part-built model whose original glazing has been damaged or lost. Which kit the canopy is cut for is given by the maker of the set.
