The twelfth issue of the Aces High modeling magazine, which AK interactive devotes to aircraft models. It is neither a book nor a kit, it is a periodical: individual issues come out around a theme and are sold separately, so you can buy exactly the subject you are interested in without taking the whole series. The theme of this issue is Hydro, that is, waterborne aviation.
Floatplanes and flying boats follow a different logic on the bench than land-based machines. The model stands on floats or on a boat-shaped hull, so it is harder to support and harder to mask. The colors are almost always a combination seen nowhere else — an underside affected by water, salt deposits, wear where the crew climbed aboard, and dirt building up along the waterline. And third: such a machine is almost always presented on a base with a water surface or on a trolley, so a single issue usually points the modeler toward a diorama as well.
Modeling periodicals are most valuable as a pictorial and step-by-step reference. They are worth reading before a build rather than during it — partly because of the choice of subject, partly because the techniques worth adopting often concern the stages done right at the start. Themed issues are also easy to file in a library by subject, and when planning the next build you return to them deliberately.
