A light gray with a warm cast, of the kind worn by the aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy at the start of the war in the Pacific.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the first months of the fighting the carrier aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy looked completely different from how they did in the second half of the war. Instead of dark green they wore a light gray finish with a warm cast, described in the literature as the color of malt. That is how the A6M2 fighters launched from the decks in December 1941, and the B5N torpedo bombers and D3A dive bombers with them.
On a model the shade has one treacherous property: in a small scale and under harsh light it slips toward the impression of pure white. That is why it is recommended to leave enough darker dividing elements on the model, whether panel lines, the anti-glare panel ahead of the cockpit or the wooden surfaces of the propeller.
Stir the bottle thoroughly. Warm light tones settle unevenly, and unstirred paint comes out cooler than it should be. It is thinned with water, and spraying it several times thinly works better.
Aircraft from the first months of the war were usually fresh, and heavily worn layers do not suit them. Wear on them belongs rather around the access points, on the wing root where ground crew walked, and on the frames of the cockpit canopy. Heavy chipping of the paint, of the kind done on the late green aircraft, would look out of place on this version and take more away from the model's credibility than it adds.
Gray in this form also works well on floatplanes and seaplanes, which kept it longer than the carrier aircraft did. On a model with a water surface it holds that the light airframe has to be set apart from the reflections on the water, otherwise the aircraft on its base will visually disappear and the diorama will lose its main point.
Rinse the remaining paint out of the airbrush as soon as the work is done.
