Yellow under the designation BN04 is one of the paints for building plastic models. It belongs to the Gunze range of paints, that is among the products meant for painting models rather than for building them. Yellow appears on models more often than one would think: warning stripes and markings on military vehicles, the hoods and flanks of racing cars, markings on aircraft, the whole bodywork of construction machinery and small items in an interior.
Yellow pigments have the weakest covering power of all the shades. Applied straight onto dark plastic it looks muddy and it only reaches full saturation after so many coats that they drown the engraving and the fine relief. The proven approach is therefore the opposite of that for dark shades: first a light, ideally white base and only then the yellow in several thin coats. The shade usually lights up after the second coat and the surface stays smooth.
Stir the paint thoroughly before use; the pigment settles to the bottom and an unmixed shade differs from coat to coat. Choose the thinner, the cleaner and the recommended thinning according to the range the paint belongs to; the figures are given on the label and in the manufacturer's instructions. Apply masking tape only onto a dry coat and pull it off at a sharp angle, so that the yellow does not peel at the edge.
