Paints for German ground equipment between 1927 and 1941: the earth yellow, brown and green of interwar camouflage as well as the later dark gray, in eight containers in all.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the 1920s German ground equipment was given a regulation that is one of the most interesting chapters in camouflage of all. Three tones applied in soft patches, earth yellow as the base with brown and deep green fields to go with it, were meant to break up the outline of a vehicle in the field. That pattern lasted through exercises and onto the first armored vehicles, and only at the end of the 1930s was it pushed out by the uniform dark finish that most people associate with the period.
Eight containers cover both phases. The earth yellow with its period designation forms the base of the multicolored scheme, while the medium brown and the deep green fill in the remaining fields. The blue-gray tone serves for chassis and lower surfaces, and the dark brown covers wooden and leather fittings. Two dark grays stand in for the later uniform coloring, and the ivory white is left for national markings, numbers and lettering.
A multicolored pattern calls for a soft transition rather than a sharp edge. The surest route is a low pressure, the gun held closer and several light passes that gradually fill the field in. Anyone working with a brush can blend the edge with a damp bristle brush before the paint pulls together. The ivory white goes on absolutely last, because it covers less well over a dark background and soils easily.
The set serves armored and unarmored vehicles, tractors, motorcycles and artillery equipment of the same period.
The sheen deserves attention too. Vehicles of that time were not as matte as models are usually built today, and a slight satin on large areas gives them a more period look than a perfectly flattened surface.
