R-98MR guided missile 1:32 from Temp Models

The set contains a 3D printed resin replica of the Soviet R-98MR air-to-air guided missile in 1:32 scale. It is an accessory for the underwing armament, not a model of an aircraft. A resin print can manage the sharp leading edges of the fins and the fine definition of the seeker head, so the missile on the pylon looks more convincing than a simplified part from a kit.

The real subject

The R-98MR is the upgraded version of the R-98 family with semi-active radar guidance, known in the West as the AA-3 Anab. It came about for the Sukhoi Su-15TM interceptor with a more capable onboard radar. The missiles were carried paired with the heat-guided R-98MT version, so that two different methods of guidance worked against one target. The Su-15TM was in service in the Soviet air defense until the end of the Cold War.

Building and painting tips

First wash the 3D printed parts in warm water with a little dish soap, so that they are rid of the residue of printing resin. Cut the supports off with a sharp blade or a fine saw as close to the part as possible and sand the marks down with your airways protected. Resin does not bond with cement for polystyrene, so use cyanoacrylate glue. Lay a thin coat of primer on before painting, otherwise the paint holds poorly on a smooth print. Assemble and paint the weapons separately and glue them onto the pylon only once the varnish has dried, so that the fine surfaces are not rubbed.
