The light gray tone of Japanese naval aircraft of the early phase of the war, in the version matching Nakajima production. A water-based acrylic, 10 ml.
Responsibility details are not available.
Before the Imperial Japanese Navy moved to dark camouflage, its machines flew in a uniform light gray finish with a hint of yellow and green. It was in this scheme that the first wave attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941, and in the same shade the A6M2 fighters and the Nakajima B5N torpedo bombers flew over the Coral Sea and at Midway.
The finish had a practical reason at sea. A light surface reflected the sun, reduced the heating of the airframe on deck and made the machine harder to see from below against the sky. Only experience from fighting over land forced the staffs to switch to dark green, which is why gray machines appear in greater numbers above all on models from 1941 and 1942.
The shade matches machines from Nakajima production. The second gray in the original range aims at aircraft built at Mitsubishi and is cooler than this one. The difference is subtle, but on a model in 1:48 scale or larger it decides how convincing the result is.
This is an acrylic paint thinnable with water, suitable for the brush and for the airbrush. Light tones generally cover less well, so it pays to spray several thin layers over a light base. The package holds 10 ml, which when sprayed will cover even a larger single-engine model with a reserve for touch-ups.
Early machines appear in photographs almost without wear; they served briefly and maintenance on deck was careful. Even so, it pays to suggest worn marks at the wing root and slight dirtying around the exhaust stubs, otherwise the result looks flat and like a plastic toy.
