IDF Gray3 Modern

The gray of modern Israeli vehicles

The shade listed as IDF Gray 3 belongs to the grays used on the ground vehicles of the Israeli armed forces. These are not camouflaged with fields of color like the vehicles of most European armies but carry a uniform finish over the whole surface. That is exactly why it matters so much: the whole model rests on a single tone, and it takes only a small shift toward a warm or a cool position for the vehicle to read differently. The range offers several Israeli grays side by side, and this shade is the third of them.

How to work with a single-color finish

A uniform surface tempts you to spray the vehicle and stop there, but without differences in intensity the model goes flat. It works well to lighten the middle of large panels, leave horizontal surfaces more faded and, on the contrary, pull the shadows under superstructures and above the running gear toward the dark. Dust from dry country shifts the gray toward a sandy position, so earth shades are used lightly and rather on the lower part of the vehicle than over the whole surface.

Painting tips

• Stir the bottle thoroughly before use; with grays, settled pigment shows immediately.
• Thin it with the thinner of the same range and apply thin coats, as one heavy coat floods the detail.
• Try the paint on a piece of plastic, as a small shift in tone shows on a large area.
• Let a gloss intermediate coat dry under the decals.
• Start with washes only once the paint has cured thoroughly.
